Steny H. Hoyer Democrat (Elected 1980), MD House district 5

Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) — Steny H. Hoyer of Mechanicsville, Md. represents the 5th District of Maryland. He was born in New York, N.Y. on June 14, 1939. Hoyer earned a B.S. from the University of Maryland in 1963 and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1966. He was a practicing attorney from 1966 to 1990 and a member of the State Senate from 1967 to 1979. Hoyer was first elected to the House of Representatives on May 19, 1981 by special election to fill the vacancy created by H. Res. 80, which declared U.S. Representative Gladys Noon Spellman’s seat vacant due to an incapacitating illness. He was elected House Majority Leader for the 110th Congress.
