President and Co-Founder

Daniel was named one of Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2010 for his work at MapLight. Prior to co-founding MapLight, he founded Say I Can, a speech recognition software firm, and he is the author of three books on speech recognition software. Daniel received an M.A. degree in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, where he attended on a National Science Foundation Fellowship, and a B.A. degree in Biomedical Ethics from Brown University. He was a 2011-13 Network Fellow at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. He lives in Berkeley, California. Learn more about Daniel G. Newman.

Operations Director

Philip provides strategic and operational guidance to support and enhance MapLight's human resources, internal systems, and physical infrastructure. His professional background includes experience with project management and software implementation, most recently in the educational publishing industry. Philip holds a B.A. degree in Psychology from Boston University.

Office Manager

Chelsea coordinates office activities and helps to keep internal operations running smoothly. She grew up in the San Diego political scene and nurtured her interest in government by volunteering on a variety of campaigns. Chelsea earned a B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley, where she taught introductory writing classes to freshmen and directed an after-school literacy program.

Executive Assistant

Ayça assists the President in maintaining organization and efficiency. She received a double B.A. in International Studies and Anthropology from the University of North Carolina and an M.A. in Conflict Resolution from Georgetown University. Prior to MapLight, she coordinated Turkey's first peace studies academic program and founded an arts and peace club in Istanbul. Her hometown is Raleigh, NC.

Irene oversees MapLight's accounting and financial operations. Irene has worked in nonprofit financial management for more than 20 years and ran a nonprofit organization for five years. She has a young adult son with autism and is active in various organizations promoting the rights and needs of individuals with autism. She has a B.A. degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Master in Public Administration from California State University, East Bay.

Alec leads MapLight’s strategic communications and media outreach. Prior to joining MapLight, Alec managed communications activities, including campaign strategy and media relations, for a variety of non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C. Alec is a Colorado native and holds a B.A. in Public Relations from Syracuse University.

Managing Editor

Frank Bass is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter whose career has focused on the intersection of government, politics and business. He is a pioneer in data-driven investigations who has worked at the Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Bloomberg News and Al Jazeera. Bass has lectured extensively on four continents and is the author of three books. He lives in southern Vermont.

Bret works on a variety of communications projects at MapLight, including editorial distribution, media relations, and digital content. He previously supported communications for several successful political campaigns, and brings experience in nonprofit and government work. He holds a B.A. in International Human Rights from the University of California, Berkeley.

Andrew is a political reporter at MapLight. He previously covered money in politics for International Business Times. A South Florida native, Andrew received a B.A. in journalism and an M.P.S. in political management from George Washington University. He currently lives in Washington, D.C.

Laura leads MapLight's data projects, overseeing the integrity and accuracy of the organization's databases and managing the collection of new data. Her previous experience includes work on the Transparency in Political Spending Act as a member of Rhode Islanders for Fair Elections. Laura received a B.A. from Brown University with concentrations in Political Science and Middle East Studies.

Chad tracks legislation as it travels through the legislative process, assembling evidence of support or opposition to bills on the part of companies and other interest groups. He graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Political Science. A native of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, Chad now resides in Oakland with his wife Sara, two dogs, and two cats.

Ashleigh investigates interest group positions on pieces of legislation and tracks the progress of bills in Congress and in the California State Legislature. She graduated with honors from Brown University with a B.A. in Political Science and Gender and Sexuality Studies. Her previous experience includes internships on political campaigns, in state government, and with a number of nonprofits that focus on reproductive justice and LGBTQ rights.

Deputy Director

DeAnna leads MapLight’s fundraising team. She is also responsible for developing and overseeing the internal processes and infrastructure to support MapLight’s strategic planning and project management, and to position MapLight for future growth and strategic response. Her previous experience includes working with nonprofits in Ecuador and Tanzania and leading a Stanford service organization. She received her B.A. degree in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Kylie supports MapLight’s Deputy Director and development team by assisting with fundraising, project management, record keeping, and impact tracking. Before joining MapLight, she served as a Jesse M. Unruh Fellow in the California State Assembly and worked as a case administrator in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She received a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine, where she graduated summa cum laude.

Hamsini leads MapLight's work to research and promote policies that reform the political process. She has previously worked with nonprofits focusing on fair trade and financial transparency. She received a B.A. with honors in Anthropology and International Studies from the University of Chicago and an M.A. in Anthropology from Columbia University.

Director of Foundation Relations

Barbara works with MapLight’s leadership to develop and strengthen relationships with foundation partners and supervise grants administration. Prior to MapLight, Barbara led fundraising activities for the National Institute on Money in State Politics and for an immigrant worker antidiscrimination project at the National Immigration Law Center. She received her B.A. degree in Sociology with a specialization in Corrections from California State University at San Jose where she graduated with Honors. A lifelong traveler, she resides most of the year in Helena, Montana with her dog, Lucky.

Development Manager

Preethi raises support for MapLight's work by sharing our efforts with foundations and individuals. Her previous experience includes working with community-based nonprofits focused on access to care and addressing social determinants of health in the Bay Area, St. Louis, and in Iganga, Uganda. Preethi holds a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in Public Health from Washington University in St. Louis. She enjoys living a few blocks from the ocean and teaching chess.

Technical Director

Leon oversees the implementation, configuration, and performance of MapLight’s databases, web applications, and internal IT operations. He has extensive experience in software engineering for the for-profit, nonprofit, and public sectors. Leon received a B.S. in Social Science from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo and an M.S. in Computer Science from California State University, Fullerton. He is an avid downhill skier and runner.

System Administrator

Mike works as part of the technical team to keep our website and databases current, user friendly, and able to respond to a large and varied audience. Mike is the former IT Director of the National Institute on Money in State Politics and also of Project Vote Smart. He has built and maintained comprehensive databases of information on the voting records, position statements, backgrounds, and campaign finances of tens of thousands of candidates for public office, along with managing Web sites and developing a set of APIs and other tools. He brings 20 years of experience in nonprofit political databases and Web needs, along with a wide variety of computer programming and application experiences.

Software Engineer

Chacha brings a user-centered design and development approach to Voter's Edge. She is an experienced technologist who is passionate about public design and civic literacy. She has a degree in American History and Anthropology from Bard College, extensive experience in iterative public design through years of work in science museums, and was in the inaugural class of Code for America Fellows.

Product Manager

Skippy works with MapLight’s users, partners, developers, and other stakeholders to lead the creation of websites and transparency tools, identifying which features will have the greatest impact. He is former product manager for the Government Transparency suite at Granicus, co-founder of The Jack and Buena Foundation, and a self-proclaimed adventurer. He has a degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Voter Information Director

Michael heads MapLight’s digital voter guide, Voter’s Edge, which provides voters with the key information they need to make an informed decision at the polls. He oversees the production of the site’s content, ensures the quality of its data, and works closely with our data and technology teams as well as our partner organizations to meet the highest standards of quality. He received his B.A. in Political Science from American University. His previous experience includes working with nonprofits addressing food security and poverty, as well as managing campaign field operations.
